Man it was refreshing seeing a ref protect a player who was obviously being targeted by the opposition. Had enough of the fouls on Hazard and warned Smalling next one is a yellow. Up steps Herrera. Imagine Silva getting that kind of protection. Or Kun.

He well and truly bottled it after the sending off though.

This is the biggest gripe I have with referees - well, one of the biggest! They apply the Laws of the Game in very specific instances in the same way judges hand down sentences. They wish to deter the villains and perpetrators. With some though deterrence will never work, and they then regret for the rest of the game having taken a decision that allows the morons to suggest that 'he ruined' the game by doing so.

He just shirks the big decisions. Jose on his case for two bookable fouls, which no one should disagree with. Valencia (2 footed, and 2 bookables on top) and Rojo(persistent fouling and 5 day stamp) should also have walked. It's not helped by cretin pundits saying he ruined the game, when the real protagonists are the complainers. Jones in midfield? I just giggled and knew what was coming. Surely the ref and everyone else knew

Hot headed decision to send Herrera off, conned by Hazard's dive for the 2nd yellow. Should've carded Rojo and and Costa and told them no more or else, seemed to realise he'd made a mistake and tried to even it up by letting everything else go.
Seems he's got form for sendings off on a regular basis

He dug his own grave by not booking more sooner. Let a hell of a lot go in first 20 mins. All United stuff. The second half was a hack fest. We get booked for sneezing near a player... no action taken and pundits (Keone) defending the two footed tackle by Valencia. The script is written. TV focus on ref decision not on the lack of discipline of the United player.

A little confused by the FA ruling that they can review serious fouls that the ref did not see.
However well intentioned that ruling is does it not condone the fact that the ref saw but did nothing about a serious foul ?.

It is correct that if a serious foul is committed then the player should be punished whether the ref saw it or not. However if he saw it and let it go surely he should be red carded as well as the player to prevent any miss application of the rules for whatever reason by the ref..

Got form for bottling decisions that are clear cut. One eye on the touchline and the other eye on the next day's headlines prevent the paying public from seeing how the laws should be applied according to the letter.

Has any of the Whistling Wankers ever come out and said, or even wrote in the report, that they saw the 'offence' and deemed it robust but fair contact? I can't think of any, or is this the way Rojo and his ilk escape when the FArce see no evidence for a charge. Rojo is the archetypal Argentina defender from the age of Rattin!
