Is there not a danger that the PL's power in terms of money becomes severely diminished if people won't pay to watch it via legal means? I know recent evidence suggests otherwise, but if your viewership figures are severely down, then why would they pay extra for the rights to show it? Obviously it's the punter who pays for the cost of the TV deals ultimately but you wonder what effect it might have the PL if Sky and BT refuse to pay X million if the viewing figures don't support the cost.

They make a fortune selling the rights abroad as well. It's the most watched league abroad. Not just BT and Sky pumping money in.

I think the biggest driver is overcoming the stupid rule that stops games being broadcast live at 3pm on the day in the country where the game is being played - if they would stop doing that I think you'd get more people coughing up
