Don't be put off mate. They might have a few PR issues, but the Buddhists are cool as fuck.

Really... I went there for a few years and it had a deeply negative effect on me.

Have a read of this...

That's the snidest website I've ever seen mate. I'd prefer it if you told us about your experiences, seriously.

Namaste

There will be no indoctrination, no force feeding of what you should think, just a simple go find out yourself.

Buddhism is not a religion, and regardless of what's been put here, you won;t have to leave your wife/kids/city etc.

It can get very 'touchy feely' at times, but it does migrate quite well into modern western lifestyle.

Be patient and compassionate and anything is possible.

May your good Karma look after you.

I looked into Buddhism but decided to go with the Papua New Guinean mud god, Pikkiwoki, as he was promising a pig and as many coconuts as you can carry.

I would rather not on here... Attached is a link from a double page article the Guardian did on the FWBO.

Friends Of the Western Buddhist Order? If I was to invent a cult name it would probably include 5 of those words. I have no affiliation with Buddhism, and I also empathise with you if you have had to deal with the thought of suicide. However, to blame an entire religion for the teachings of an off-shoot (cult) is narrow minded in my opinion.

Namaste.

Just upping this topic.

I've been studying Theravada Buddhism for a few months now, for a few years I've just been reading loads of info on Buddhism and there are do many different schools of thought it can be a bit head scratching, especially when doing it by myself.

Finally, I've found Theravada so far to be more up my street and I'm still exploring this.
I may believe something completely different by whenever.

Found a nice place to Meditate which is Theravada focused in Chorlton (Mcr)

Meditate every morning and at night.

It's helping me change my thought patterns from negative to positive more.

Some deep meditative states I've experienced have resulted in me feeling so enlightened, like one who uses LSD would describe as a "trip"

It's hard following the paths though. One being to Never Lie.
I still find myself telling meaningless white lies, but I'm realising this and I've often told the person I'm speaking to I've just lied.

Being truthful doesn't get you alot of friends... But it certainly gets you the right ones.
The truth does hurt but it definitely brings happiness.

Being truthful doesn't get you alot of friends.

So, do these buddhists introduce themselves with, ''Hello fatty, is your mate still shagging your Mrs?''
I mean, that kind of truthfulness, where you spew absolutely everything?
Not taking the piss or anything, but it doesn't surprise me that the message may take a while to get through.

'These' buddhists?

You yourself could be buddhist.
Asking the question of say: what do buddhists think of________?
Will give you a vast amount of responses as there is no singular school of thought.
The same applies with other religions such as Islam, Christianity and so on.

Asking a Christian if they believe in Abortion, well that individual Quaker will have a complete different view to the other Quaker, never mind the Methodist, Catholic, Roman Cath' and so on and so forth.

One is taught to follow the Eight Fold path.

As you can see here, one is "Right Speech"
And it states say nothing that hurts others.

Now this is very hard to practice, especially when conversing with multiple people on a public forum.
One thing I may say on here many people won't be offended by, yet it may sadly hurt others.
But I cannot predict who is going to see my views and how they may misinterpret or see my views.

We live and we learn.
One of the best ways of learning is by accepting we are imperfect beings and that we do make misstakes ;)

I've only been doing this for a few years now.
I've met people who were born into this way of life and we're schooled from birth.

I'm just trying.

Thought you were a bit older than that Ste.
Lol, I meant were schooled.
I went to a Roman Catholic school.
I was also a Choir Boy.

For the record, I state above that to not Lie is a path.
It isn't directly in the eight fold path although in the A to Zen of life by Dalai Lama he states on N to : Never Lie, Steal or Cheat.

Zen Buddhism is different in one way or the other to say Theravada, Mahayana, Tantric etc etc...

I just like to be conscious of this "be truthful" view and speak the truth.
Makes me feel happy inside.
