no discipline, utter guff. You have to be able to bat 200/300 balls and score at 60/70 strike rate, England either just defensive without the ability to score or flash without any backbone or guile to be able to defend their wicket at the same time. County Championship not delivering players of the required standard, not even Root is consistent enough.

Agree we missing some steel and Jennings balance will be gone come end of this series! Dawson and Wood need to improve a lot more or we will be looking for someone else.

Sorry but batting at 60/70 strike rate is incredibly aggressive for test match cricket, anything over 50 is (Pieterson's strike rate was about 60, de Villiers is at about 53). And if Root isn't consistent enough then fuck knows who is.

Seen across play so far, it doesn't look as if there's a great deal between the sides. Better preparation for the Ashes, especially since this is a four Test series.

I know the bookies are tight-arsed bastards with their odds but to have England at 7-1 to win this test at the start of this innings has got to be up there with the biggest piss-takes ever, given that no team in the 130-plus year history of test cricket has chased down more than 418 to win a match.

Excellent session for the South Africans. The bowlers have stuck to their plans and have been rewarded accordingly. England, however, have been poor and will have to rethink the opening three and settle on an order quickly. Not convinced that pushing Root up to three is the answer if he isn't as keen to play there.
