Lucas Paquetá

Would be like another Philips & Nunes kind of signing. Would David Silva, Ozil or Bernie be playing at West Ham, Everton or Southampton at age of 26?
Surely some other team would had signed him if not us if he was really a world beater.

I strongly disagree and that's with knowing Paqueta (West Ham) is turning 27 just after the start of next season, that's one of your teams listed by the way...

Virgil van Dijk (Southampton) that's 2 out of 3 teams you mentioned but he was actually older while at Southampton too...

Fernandinho was even older at 28 and still playing in a piss poor Ukrainian league, which was quite frankly a one team league for his entire time at Shakhtar Donetsk... Before that he played for an average mid table club if they were lucky in Brazil.

Tony Book was 30 before ever playing in the English football league, before that non league at Bath he never made his top flight debut until just before he turned 32... Yet was still was good enough to be captain of a team that won 4 major trophies, plus a charity shield in just under two years while also winning the FWA (football writers award) player of the year.

There have been other players his age and older from long ago or our more recent history too, players like Lescott (Everton) or Barry (villa) that's 3 and and an extra 4th one too at 26 or older.
There's plenty of others too but those last couple are more recent English examples, I'm guessing you're classing WHU as a lessor team but both Lescott and Barry's teams were no better... Just remembered Jesus Navas was 28 and although he wasn't as good as expected G/A wise and Sevilla were on the slide, that still didn't stop him from massively contributing to our teams success on the pitch just with effort alone.
Was your opinion any different when we signed Akanji aged 26 only a couple years back? Age isn't the issue having a strong mentality with a willingness to work hard and good quality is.

Lucas Paqueta possesses all that he was easily Lyon's best player and only left AC Milan before that because they needed money, you must realise the EPL is enjoying a an era of prosperity where even some of the worst teams can afford potentially great players, quite reminiscent of Serie A during the early 90s when every team had the budget for a truly top player.
Paqueta is far from old his very best years in football are certainly ahead of him, he's a very talented player with a lot of quality along with a determined attitude, which fits nicely with this club just as long as he's cleared of all charges. With much better players around him he'll definitely shine for any top team, if he joins us or another one when leaving WHU he'll be a great signing for someone.

Nobody should be underestimating Lucas Paqueta, definitely not based on the club he's playing for at aged just 26.

I’d love someone with a bit of aggression in midfield.

But we foul tactically very well.

He can pause very good, good distributor, works in defence

knowing that Pep won't be around much more, max 3 seasons then age won't be an issue, he would a good addition for a player who won't need much time to get used to system

he reminds me of combination of Gundo and Mahrez

We are clearly after players that suit a system around Haaland. Pep clearly think Paqueta can help.

Not saying Haaland isn’t doing a good job this year, he is. But we need more options.

- Fernandinho?
- 100mil on an almost 26 year old Grealish with 2 full seasons fighting relegation/mid table in the prem?
- Ake?
- Mahrez?

Players not being at a top club in their mid twenties doesn't mean that's their level. West Ham finished 7th, got to semi's of Europa season before he signed. Splashed like 200mil in the market the summer they got him, guess he joined a project he thought had potential(you know like the Daves and Yayas of our come up).

Also signing players from clubs that aren't winning/competing every year means they come with that motivation/hunger ready to go. Pep is clearly a fantastic motivator as we keep going every season. With majority of coaches though you always see that drop-off after a good season or two(1 team leagues not included). Bringing in the players from clubs lower down the chain has to help boost everyone else going into a season as the hunger is infectious(see Erling)

You still havent answer the question. Would bigger clubs have allowed the likes of David Silva, Mesut Ozil or Bernardo Silva to remain at average clubs at age of 26. All example you have given are of defensive players apart from Navas who was a WC winner and played at Sevilla, one of the biggest clubs in Spain. And he too was just a squad player and not an integral part of the team. All the players that you have mentioned apart from Van Djik and Dinho wont make it to out current squad. Akanji doest count and we bough him at a snip and not 85 million what West Ham is demanding, and how u compare Dortmund with West ham and Southampton, I will never understand,

Ake was 40 million signing and not 85 million signing and signed as a squad player intitially + helped out with HG quota.
Mahrez had won the league and was Player of the Year of PL for that season.
Fernandinho was a DM and not an AM. Paqueta is an AM like player I have mentioned in my original post.
Grealish won Villa matches on his own and was the most marketable English Player when we signed him. Paqueta doesnt justify a similar fees.

Paqueta is not even player of the season at West Ham. Ward Prowse has better stats than him this season who plays deeper than Paqueta.

Another advantage of signing players from lower teams, can sign them as "squad" players so rotating is more accepted and causes less problems.. can't have a team of Erlings.

Yeah Mahrez won the league 2 years before we signed him, what was he still doing at Leicester at 27?

Cbs are cheaper than Mids and inflation since then.

Fernandinho was a box to box only turned into an out & out DM when he moved to us and foiled Yaya.

You don't have to be player of the season to be a good fit for another club? Anyway Ward prowse takes all their set pieces he has better stats than most CDMs.
