I know a guy who recently got sentenced to ten years in prison for having consensual sex with a 16 year old girl. Have to say can't really believe that shit is happening on the scale that report suggests. The courts are pretty fucking strict on that shit generally

I'm puzzled by that. Leaving aside the moral arguments about that relationshipfor a moment (and it doesn't sit easily with me), is that illegal? Using the stories about child marriages in Idaho, I presume the age of consent is comfortably lower than 16. So how did he end up getting ten years for that (not that I'm going to shed too any tears for him)? I find the way that Americans spell 'license' to be offensive in the extreme.
I thought it was spelt both ways depending on whether it's a noun or a verb.

I think they have different age of consent laws in different states.
