Why hasn't England ever produced the worlds best footballer?

Twice.

As a nation we have had 4 individual winners. Only Germany and Italy have had more (5).

Spain only has 2 and Argentina 1.

Wasn't keegan European player of the year twice not world player of the year

Edit. Scrub that just googled it

Simples imo.

Yoof culture in this country.

The amount of talent in this country that's pissed it up a wall, partied, screwed, gambled, snorted, spent and raved their way to mediocrity.

The best in the world completely dedicate themselves entirely to their game, and set aside the decadence which the ruins the rest.

And therein lies the problem, you can still get very well paid for mediocrity in the current game.
We produce the world's best in plenty of other sports.

I think this is a great answer. You need a community and culture that provides the perfect cocoon for success. Florida ain't a wonderful place but it produces more sports talent than anywhere in the US. The dedication to sports in even the poorest sections is unreal.

I completely agree.

The thread title does say "footballer" though.

And my point of the very best dedicating themselves completely to their sport remains valid.
Why are footballers in particular lacking dedication then, when plenty of other sportspeople are amongst the top of their field?

They lead the way in innovation, sports science and coaching.

British Cycling in recent years has entered this realm.

Until England leads the way in those aspects we will always be chasing the pack.

I also think that we don't follow suit unlike South Americans who are in most part trying to escape adversity and are willing to work like mad to do so. As soon as a kid shows promise in this country he gets offered contracts that can sometimes make him a millionaire before he has even turned 20/21.
