Are City bad at selling?

We've had more than our fair share of being utterly wank at buying, so that doesn't help us when it comes to selling those players.

If we were better at buying we wouldn't have to sell so much deadwood on crazy wages.
More than other teams though. Spurs have bought bad buys and made a loss a year or two later. Pavlyuchenko, Palacios, Bassong, Adebayor,Chiriches, Soldado,Paulinho.
They can all sell high for a Bale or Modric that they didn't want to sell.

Although there is better control with the senior squad, wages is still the biggest problem (especially during the early part of Sheikh Mansour's ownership when we were bridging the gap) in either moving players on for profit or recouping the money. We do better with getting good fees for the younger players.

I'm not sure, because we managed to sell Garcia for £14 odd million so someone in the ranks must be alright at their job!

I don't agree with the Rags comparison. I actually think they're in the same boat as us in this instance.

I can't think of a single player we've sold since the takeover that we wanted to keep. Likewise for the Rags with the exception of Ronaldo who was sold for record money.

It's simple supply and demand. Because we are both at the top of the food chains we're not selling clubs. Players are only sold if they're deemed not good enough or we don't want them. We're effectively selling 'damaged' goods. Buying teams know we want to get rid so they immediately hold all the cards.

Wages are also an issue. If you look at a number of the players we're struggling to sell, they're on wages that far exceed their ability or reputation. It's a simple fact that the bigger clubs have more money than smaller ones and often the small clubs cannot afford to pay the higher wages and the player is unwilling to take a pay cut.

Often we want to sell more than the buyer wants to buy and clubs know this. We're left with the decision, either take a lower fee and get rid or be left with a player we have no use for on high wages. This gives us a reputation as soft, which is why other clubs take the piss. It's a vicious cycle.

we're a buying club because our desired rate of improvement (since takeover) and our actual rate of improvement (since takeover) far outstrip the ability of the academy to supplement the squad.

This is the key. It is why the folks that moan when youth like Denayer don't get a shot are wrong. Nobody has ever done what we are doing. Assuming we can actually sell the big four and aren't hamstrung with them again next summer, this should be the end of this phase. We have kids finally emerging who actually have a chance to make it. This will all balance out over the next year or two as we ascend to the very top of the footballing world.

Thats because of how many players we buy. Again we are churning through players because of how quickly we ascending the football ladder.

Look at Nolito. We will sell him this summer after one year and we are going to take a loss on him. Most posters on here would consider him a bad buy after this past season. When in fact without his contributions last fall we very likely would have missed out on a CL spot. The money we spent on him to play essentially three months was well worth as it puts us in a position this summer to assemble a squad that can win the CL.

We are buying 8-9 players this summer!! In future summers we will have 2-3 targets and every one of them will be established world class players or Mbappe like kids. In that phase of the project we won't be wank at buying.
