I promised my self when I retired I would read the BBC top 100 classic books

Im now reading George Orwels classic....... 1984
Up to part 2 now, cant put it down, brilliant descriptive writing. (I cant stop relating it to North Korea)

My next one will be Catcher In The Rye probably.

Anybody else read these kind of classic books ?
 
Read pretty much all the classics...my top 3 would be...
grapes of wrath. Stein beck
a tale of two cities. Dickens
in cold blood. Capote. ..not sure if that would be a top 100 tbh.
Some great literature in front of you mate....
 
Just checked out the list, obviously some great books, probably read about a quarter of them. A few surprises, three Harry Potter seems a little excessive

Wow...only done about a third of them.....stay away from ulysses, life is far too short.
 
I've read about half. But I wouldn't consider many of them classics.

I’ve not read classics for a while. I used to read them when I commuted between Wythenshawe and Manchester on public transport, back in the early eighties. I have read most of Dickens. My favourite was The Old Curiosity Shop. Bleak House, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist were all enjoyable too.

I enjoyed all the Sherlock Holmes stories. I went to Les Miserables, and followed it up by reading the book, and followed that with The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas.

I couldn’t really get into the romantic stuff by the Brontes, and that genre, but I did manage a couple of depressing Thomas Hardy novels - The Mayor of Casterbridge and Tess of the D’uerbervilles.

Catcher in the Rye and Of Mice and Men were OK, but not a patch on our own Victorian classics.

My favourite author is definitely Charles Dickens though.
 
About ten years ago got into the habit of reading a Dickens novel every December started with Christmas Carol and its become part of Christmas for me even though they arent Christmas novels. One to avoid though is Moby Dick I cant give up when I've started a novel but that one was a slog
Enjoyed a few Robert Louis Stevenson and Walter Scott ones too.
