Thousands were captured and killed straight away. No need to hang them up especially as it was a laborious job to do. Spartacus was never found. They assumed he had died in battle. The slaves that were hung along the Appian Way had been deemed by the Romans that they had forfeited their rights to live but it's very hard to tell if they were from his slave army or not, especially as nearly a third of all Italians were slaves at this time.

It was more likely to be a statement of intent from the Romans. Do this again and look what will happen to you.
