Ah! So Laporte was your odd man out? Sorry, the way you attacked Stones, I just assumed he was the one you wanted out.

Okay, it makes sense why you didn't argue the language angle then. Of all the combinations though, I think Stones/Kompany is the worst on paper.

For one they both prefer and predominantly play RCB. One has been error prone (as you've claimed) and the other creatively shy ( as I have claimed).

Laporte is infinitely better than both at LCB. So to drop him to play both seems even less logical.

My sense is if Otamendi is not starting then barring injury, Laporte is guaranteed to start (as Ota is his main competition at LCB). So the only question becomes who does he start with? Komps or Stones?

Is be shocked if both Laporte and Otamendi are not in the lineup. I expect LCB will always be manned by 1 of them unless both are injured.

So a Kompany and Stones partnership is the least likely to be fielded of the 6 possibilities.

Didn’t attack Stones just stated the facts.

Kompany has played countless games at LCB. So it’s not an issue at all.

Stones need game time so he is certain to start. The question is does he start with Laporte or Kompany?

Can’t see Laporte starting any one of the games next week (Arsenal x2, Chelsea) so might as well give Stones and Kompany a go tonight. Who will both start up coming games.

While Laporte may be our best LCB, I don’t know why you are assuming he’s adjusted and ready to start every game. Yes he did well on his debut but was nothing special against Leicester. No point to rush him when we now have all our CBs fit.

vinny and john i hope start, john needs a bit of leading at the minute and needs to play, eric has plenty of time to settle in

I'd much prefer to go with Stones and Laporte if Otamendi isn't going to play. They are more suited to the way we play than Kompany I think.

Having said that, perhaps Guardiola will hold one of them back to play with Otamendi in the final next weekend and give Kompany a run out this evening.

If the bolded is true, isn't that a strong reason to play him against Wigan?

Since like you said, he won't be starting any of the bigger games.

Personally, I think he is no more risky than a rusty Kompany and a recently error prone Stones. And he is a better Left sided Center back. So I see no legitimate reason why he shouldn't start.

Well actually, there is one reason ( If Pep concludes he is the best LCB on the squad and has decided to predominantly save him for the big games). In that case, he is likely to start the very games you think he won't start :)

But if I'm reading Pep right ( which I often don't) this will be a Stones/ Laporte start because they both need game time, but more importantly that means he gets to save Kompany to play in the finals and lift the cup If we win.

I sense Pep will play Kompany in the Cup finals (all of them if we make it to each final). The sentiment of the Captain lifting the cup is important to him.

And he has hinted at this before. So I'm almost certain Kompany plays against Arsenal. Not so certain he does here. And if he does, I expect it will be with Laporte.

We are finally blessed with good CB's,i think we should use vinny whilst he is fit and able and john hasn't been great since his injury so i'm thinking he needs a familiar old hand with him, thats my logic anyway,we have time to see who goes with who, nice prob to have at last

Yea Stones showed great leadership by coming back from injury and making a mistake per game. His lack of form plus Laporte being new to the league (said himself he still needs to learn what’s a foul here and what’s not) and the game being away to Wigan means that partnership could do well or could also be an absolute disaster. Not to mention Laporte doesn’t speak any English and Stones knows only a little Spanish. It’s an unnecessary risk.
What shite.

God only knows how we will set up tonight, there are now just so many options it is hard to pick a line up.
The only shoe in tonight that I can see is Bravo, other than that I wouldn't have a clue.
