Lets see if we win any trophies with Gundogan playing regularly in that position.
Had a response written but erased it. It's not a worthwhile argument. So I'd rather pass on it.

But as facts go. If we are 3-0 with him there against 3 of the top 6, I sincerely doubt we'd have any problems winning trophies with Ilkay at DM

Just watched the penalty again and have to say, what was Lloris thinking? I just cannot fathom how any player could contort his body from that run up to put it to the keeper's right so it was always going to his left. Impossible to stop anyway, but diving the other way! :-o

Ilkay disagrees

Perhaps Pep will play him there then.

So far he seems to prefer someone else. Can't think why.

You are trying really hard to have a strawman argument. The issue isn't whether Gundogan is the best ( or even better) DM - no one has argued that.

You've severally argued that we couldn't survive without Dihno doing 'all the defending' he does. That fact so far simply is false. On 3 occasions now we've done it and qon comfortably. Against very good opposition I might add.

Never said anything of the sort. It's you who keeps saying it.

I say Fernandinho is one of, if not THE best in that position, because of his ability to cover defensive situations like a top defender, but also build attacks.

Gondogan is a good player who was a fantastic player but has lost some due to injury. But he isn't Fernandinho & that"s why Pep still picks Fern even when he's fucking knackered.

In the Prem, if we pick a fancy dan passing machine for that position rather than someone who does both jobs, like Fern, I believe we may suffer for it, so I hope we find a player with similar defensive attributes, to replace him.

My mistake, what I meant to say was you've severally said we'd struggle if we fail to get a "Dihno like player who does all that defending"

Luckily for me, I didn't have to go searching as you've said it again above. And like I've said, the evidence so far suggest you are wrong.

As every time we've done it, we' won. All you have to do is simply project from the evidence available.

Arsenal, Tothenham, Chelsea. Gundogan at DM. Win, win, win,. Who exactly in the prem do you think we'll struggle against?

And there in lies the point. Whether it's a tackling Dihno or a passing Gundogan, we will be fine against 90% of the league. The question is the remaining 10%. And most of those guys press. I'll let you do the math.

Gundogan is more press resistant than Dinho, which makes him the better option against top opposition who will press us.

If we play 3-5-2, then Gundogan becomes an even better option because you don't need a defensive pivot as much in that formation due to the extra CB.

And yet our ball retention vs Spurs was way below our usual standard.
