Toady 12th february is the 80th aniversary of the assault on suicide hill in the battle of Jamara where 375 members of the 600 volunteers of xv international brigades british battallian died fighting franco along with the irish battalian and balkan
battalian.
Of those that died was local speedway star, Oldham born Clem "daredevil" Beckett who was killed helping defend the hill

Over another 150 other british fighters were captured







I think it is fitting to remember these brave men that left home to fight facism and francos dictatorship while europes politicians of the time ignored or secretly supported it.
