City pre-season tour of US - v United 20th / Real Madrid 26th / Spurs 29th July

You'd be surprised with how many fans they've got over the pond, partly down to the fact they share the same name as one of the most successful NBA teams of recent years. Americans for you, would've followed United a few years ago if they were into 'soccer'.

I blame Bill Simmons and his two part ESPN.com piece in 2006 on choosing a Premier League team. He chose Spurs, because; his friend is a Chelsea fan or he would have chosen them, they are located in London, they remind him of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Seriously, after this article it seemed a lot of dicks that could not have cared less about football before were "Spurs fans".

Spurs are the acceptable team to support.

You can't support City or Chelsea because you hate them and are vaguely aware that they spend lots of money.

You can't support United or Arsenal because you'd be a 'gloryhunter' like all the other Americans and you're not like them.

You can't support a team that finishes lower than 8th because you want the vague chance of winning things because that's what your support is pretty much predicated on.

Your choices then are Spurs or Liverpool. Liverpool are a bit too shit for you to support, so Spurs it is.

Then you make up reasons after the fact about San Antonio or cowboy boots or whatever.

Nice city San Diego. Worth a few days if people can go. Excellent night life in the Gaslamp quarter too.
And the Old Town. Very Mexican. Went there for a day from LA and stayed for 3 nights!

If we had a like button I'd press it. "Like".

Anyone who chooses a team is a plastic fan, as team identification is part of your socialisation and not a conscious decision in any way for real fans.

The problem is plastic fans feel entitled to strip mine the culture of real fans by pretending to support clubs they have no association with, and clubs encourage it in order to fleece the plastics.

A pretend game in america is something reel fans would ignore mostly.

I can understand travelling all over the world trying to drum up support. What I cant understand is treating it like a win doesnt matter then getting beaten how the fuck does that drum up more fans

I don't disagree.
