Worrying that Diarra is now being linked by Guillem Balague with Real Madrid- cant see him chosing us over them the way we are playing at the moment...just have to hope its already signed and sealed

The Portsmouth midfielder, Lassana Diarra, has emerged as a potential transfer target for Real Madrid.

The Spanish club are in need in reinforcements in central midfield and Diarra has been identified by new boss Juande Ramos as a player who may fulfill the necessary criteria. Madrid’s need for defensive cover in middle has been made all the more urgent following confirmation that Mahamadou Diarra will be sidelined for around nine months after undergoing surgery on his right knee this week.

There had been reports in the media this week claiming that Juande Ramos had urged his new club to make a move for one of his former players at Tottenham, Didier Zokora, to fill the hole in the centre of Real Madrid’s midfield. However, Lassana Diarra is the more likely target as a player who Ramos tracked during his time in the Premiership and who’s greater technical ability and superior passing would make him a far more suitable player for Real Madrid.

As well as possessing some of the technical qualities necessary to succeed in Spain, Lassana Diarra also bears many physical similarities to Claude Makelele, a player who he has often been seen as a natural successor to - and whose qualities have been missed by Real Madrid ever since Makelele left for Chelsea in 2003. Ironically, Lassana Diarra also played for Chelsea and was once considered by Chelsea as the long term successor to Makelele.
