An earthquake recorded at magnitude 6.2 has struck central Italy, with reports of extensive damage, people trapped, others fleeing into the streets and blackouts near the epicentre.

It struck north east of Rome in Rieti and nearby the small town of Armatrice the mayor said residents were buried under debris and the town “isn’t here any more”.

Mother Nature at her worst.

I'm glad you this you make others aware of what's happening with the post I'd have expected more replies by now.

38 dead now it says. They have tremors almost daily I think and get a large earthquake every couple hundred years or so.

Isn't it the "anniversary" of Pompeii being flattened today as well?

I feel so sorry for those people out there, I know what they are going through,
strange how a quake that is not really that big caused so much damage.
i think perhaps the altitude has something to do with it ?,
fear the death toll will continue to rise as the days pass.

Old buildings that couldn't withstand this magnitude. Newer buildings would have resulted with far less deaths.
