Football Specials

Loved the Football Specials. Going down to Piccadilly on the Monday for a ticket prior to the next away game before it sold out. Getting chased around whichever town or city we were playing in as soon as it pulled into the Station. Then taking your life into your hands walking back to the Station at places like Leeds and Liverpool.

Anyone on the one to Barnsley in the 80’s which got stuck due to a horse on the line? Pulled in with around 400 lads on it 30 mins or so into the game. Must have looked like the scene out of Zulu to anyone looking on with everyone running towards the ground to get in!

At Luton away we were sat at a table when we went into a tunnel ... completely dark as all the light bulbs had gone ... and when we came out of the tunnel the table had gone as well !
Was that the littlewoods up tie midweek m8. If so i was on that, got a bit tasty on the buses laid on at Luton to the ground - armpit of a place.

Seem to remember there was an office up a side street near the main entrance at Maine Road for the supporters club in the 70's, can anyone remember that? From memory you had to join the club and then you could use either the buses and trains. The trains were brilliant, old rolling stock no heaters playing Risk or monopoly on route, we always seemed to go down what appeared un used lines in the back of beyond......brilliant days them, 20 year old, money in my pocket with no responsibilities!!

Crikey , we must have been on the same trains.

Specials in the 80s were brilliant fun, I know alot that went on back then is viewed as unacceptable and mostly with good reason, all the same it was so much more fun. They say the characters have gone from the pitch these days, I think it is equally true from in the stands too. An away day on the special you would meet the best and funniest characters imaginable.

1-0 win at Millwall (Tony Adcock) in 87
Post Match Police Escort down a dark housing estate with the City fans whistling the Bridge on the River Kwai theme tune.
Still makes me laugh.
