Not sure why people always insist on peddling the lie that we conned him into a contract with no intention of playing him.

We tried to loan Mangala out, which he and Mendes seemed receptive too and then vetoed, then We had a deal for Demichelis lined up, Demichelis himself said he had packed his bags and was getting ready to move back to Argentina when River Plate suddenly backed out of the deal. We definitely didn't renew Demichelis deal as @twosips has been saying, not sure where that idea has come from, it happened the previous season.

All that left us with an extra player, and with no other takers for Demichelis, told Denayer he'd play more on loan than as a 5th CB, which he'd still be alongside Demichelis (who was our best CB the previous season) and Mangala who the club still hoped would succeed.

When we offered him the contract he got, the intention was to bring him into the first team. Circumstances changed, he had to go on loan again, no one tricked him or was deceitful.

Then he went on loan and went backwards, he didn't play particularly well that season and so Guardiola arrived and instead of seeing the bright young player who'd done well in Celtic, met a kid who refused to be 5th choice CB last season (which would have seen him play a lot as it transpired). The club then had to fight tooth and nail to have him play in the Premier League because he wanted another loan to Turkey for some reason.

He got got unlucky in 15/16, and got impatient last summer. Would be good to see him make it here but he probably won't, and if he doesn't it's not because the club deviously tricked him into a new deal, it's because shit happens, transfer deals collapse and he didn't get the bit of luck that every young player needs when coming through.

Denayer renewed his contract in the summer of 15. City extended Demichelis' contract in 2015 too, despite fully well knowing Denayer was having a stormer of a season at Celtic/immense praise from the Belgian coach and had standout international games/performances at the San Siro for Celtic and had a ridiculously quickly growing reputation. We took the safe option and renewed Demi. Fair enough.

He was also then told he'd get a chance as the fourth centre-back and that no other defender was being brought in. He renewed his contract mid July. We signed Otamendi a month later, an opportunistic signing out of the blue. Denayer joined Galatasary ten days after that. It was pretty strongly reported that Denayer's camp was surprised by this after they'd been lead to believe Denayer was going to be 4th choice, and was all of a sudden 5th choice.

We 100% went back on our word and just shifted him out on loan instead. Agree it's gone downhill since then and that some of it is his fault perhaps, but the choice of clubs, the circumstances...it was all totally fucking avoidable.

Yes, Demichelis was renewed in February, months before Denayer was. But I'm sure you already knew that.

Just as I'm sure you knew that Demichelis was almost out the door after the Otamendi signing, and that we tried to loan Mangala as part of the Otamendi signing.

The plan was for Otamendi to replace Mangala like for like, leaving Denayers place as 4th CB.

Then the second plan was for Otamendi i, Kompany, Mangala and Denayer to be the CBs with Demichelis to leave back to Argentina but River Plate pulled out at the last minute, leaving us with too many CBs and only one, by far the most junior who could be loaned.

It is not true, as you keep implying that the club never had any intention of bringing him into the team and lied to him during his contract negotiations.

I've updated the post since then, but as I said, the Demichelis thing was just ridiculous caution, not misleading. Can just about accept that level of lack of forward planning cos it isn't misleading.... And it was March btw, more than enough time to see how great Denayer was playing...

it's the Otamendi thing that was deceptive. Totally. When combined with the comical overcaution with trusting Demi yet again, a man who could clearly have dropped off a cliff at any point, over a ridiculously talented young prospect...well yeah. City that.

A guy who had a decent season in Scotland or the club's best CB in the previous season? The fact they tried to sell Demichelis for Denayer in the first place was surprising, the fact that when a transfer fell through and Pellegrini had to choose between the two, he got loaned is not.

Not to mention the fact that Denayer didn't take his chance with a new manager, world renowned for his development of youth, he demanded to be loaned instead of being 4th choice CB, and then tried his best to go back to Galatasaray where he'd stagnated and been played out of position the year before, taking to having his agent complaint to the media then as well.

Been treated really poorly it seems. Signed a new contract and a few weeks later we should signed a 30 plus million defender whose hardly set the world alight.

As said above Otamendi was supposed to play alongside him, not instead of him.

The club tried to offload Demi and Mangala and couldn't, so Denayer got an extra year on loan, and could have come back to a team with only 3 other CBs, one of whom was a cripple, but instead demanded to go on loan.

Bit harsh to underplay it as a 'decent' season. Thought you were better than that. Any of our young lads that go and earn a league award in their debut season is a bit better than 'decent'. He did better than Roberts did technically. Celtic fans loved him. Wilmotts was tipping him to be world class...

It was a marvellous DEBUT season alongside a man not rated at £60m+. He was strolling it, add that to the fact that he was immensely highly rated at our academy. EDS player of the year. All signs were pointing towards him being a wonderful player. His successful, award winning season pointed at that. I'm sorry, but it was hardly a surprise to sell the old bloke who sits on the bench to give the exciting, potentially top class young one, one of our own nonetheless, a chance for FREE. But no, we went with the old bloke. Backwards, negative thinking nothingness - but that's Pellegrini for you. A man that put Scott fucking Sinclair, a player who clearly had no future at City, on when we were 3-0 up at home and had Ambrose on the bench who was absolutely on fire for the EDS. A literally ridiculously negative and short term approach but typical of him.

Oh and you've still not responded to the Otamendi thing - that was the nonsense one. He was told no other major CB signings would be made. Even Mangala thought that too. They actually tried to get rid of Mangala behind his back, which once again was widely reported with the loan stuff, leaving Mangala 'fuming' about it as he had no idea, but when he dug his heels in Denayer was the fall guy. It was all bollocks and ridiculously badly managed. Denayer's camp was pissed.

And he wouldn't have been 4th choice last year either. Kolarov was already well established as a CB by Pep at this point as Denayer barely got a look in in preseason and Pep was clearly making Kolarov one of his four...and then of course. Kompany. Stones. Otamendi. Given how little time Adarabioyo got, he was probably right there. Don't really blame him for not trusting the club after the 15/16 summer.
