Actually before the Abramovich takeover, they were almost going bust having spent heavily to try and win the league. Without Abramovich, it's more likely they would have done a Leeds and ended up in administration followed by relegation rather than mid table mediocrity. Having said that, thanks to Thaksin's problems we weren't that much different before being taken over by the Sheikh in 2008.
