He didn't lead his country anywhere, to be fair mate. His own father wanted to disown him, I believe, after he got into bed with Franco for power and money. Then when Franco died he tried to take absolute power back under the crown but craved in to democracy after pressure from various political parties.

This is an interesting link in English which charts the relationship between the monarchy and Franco. To be fair to Juan Carlos he was born into a tricky situation and he didn't choose to be King. However anyone who likes to hunt Elephants and kill them for sport is a **** in my eyes.

No universal suffrage, dissidents jailed, possibly tortured and exiled, no free press, apostasy punishable by death, illegal for Muslim women to marry non-Muslims, etc. Now it's probably better than many other regimes but it's certainly far from being a beacon of human rights.
