Their opinions are indeed valid, however fact and fiction are deliberately interchanged by the media then presented not as opinion but fact.
Never let the truth get in the way of a GOOD story used to be the proud boast of newspaper people. Seemingly that has now been extended to be for ANY opinion or article whatever its literary merit or original validity.

I think the point he's making is that it might not be their true opinion and they're just trying to get a rise from City fans and pandering to the rags and dippers.
