Microsoft Word Problem

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with this. Having a bit of a problem with Word in that the cursor has changed to some weird symbol and there are dots in the spaces between words making it very distracting. Anyone know what this is and how I can fix it?

with the dots you need to find a icon at the top that looks like a backward P and click it that should sort it
