Monumental mess ups

Five points from five games required for promotion against relegation fodder like Oldham and Bury.

So far we've taken one point from the first three games, scoring a grand total of no goals in the process.

Fleetwood could replace us in the automatic promotion places at the weekend with one game to play.

Has there ever been a f**k up of such monumental proportions?

Us older blues expect them until it's mathematically impossible.

Come on Fleetwood. Got a bit of a soft spot for them.

Very happy Dzeko and Aguero stopped us taking top spot in this thread.

Wembley 2013. Losing a cup final, with that squad, to a team that was relegated a few days later. Notwithstanding the shitstorm that was going on behind the scenes at the time.

The 'choke' I always remember was by Wolves in 2001/2, when they and City moved well clear at the start of Division One (as the second tier was called then) after New Year. At one stage, they were 8 points ahead of us, though we had three games in hand, and their manager Dave Jones got very chippy indeed when pundits were suggesting that we were the best team in the division.

Anyway, with 9 games left, they were still 2 points in front of us with us now having one game in hand. More pertinently, as it turned out, they had a lead of 9 points over WBA in third, as well a game in hand and a much better goal difference: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/division-one/2001-2002/table/2002-03-05

They then took 10 points from their remaining games, to finish 13 points behind us and three behind West Brom: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/division-one/2001-2002/table/2002-03-05

And then they blew it in the semi finals of the play-offs against sixth-placed Norwich.

For what it's worth, I still think Bolton will do it. Though, like most Blues, I'd be pleased for Uwe if Fleetwood made it.
