I think Schneiderlin or Song will arrive this summer.

Two good homegrown centre midfielders.

City have to think twice now. If Dyke's proposals go through, neither of these will count as homegrown from 2016 and then you have to ask, is Alex Song or even Schneiderlin (depending on what alternatives are available) worth a spot in the 25 if they take 1 of the 13 foreign spots allowed. The 17 spots right now are like gold dust, imagine how selective we'll have to be if it drops to 13 as we'll be padding our squad with English mediocrity.

It'll never happen, it would ruin every chance in Europe for English teams, it would be a selfdestruction plan from Dyke.

We thought teams would say no to FFP as it ruined the dreams of smaller clubs. But they all backed it. Never say never... my guess is if United and Arsenal decide these rules benefit them they will use their sway to influence the other teams, just as they did with Premier League FFP (remember the infamous 'letter'?).

If these rules did pass, a player like Alex Song would overnight go from a potentially very useful homegrown squad player to a liability who would need to be sold ASAP.

Not really, when you consider United were perennially more successful in Europe with a core of British players than we have been with our alleged superior imports. When Chelsea won the CL in 2012 they had 4 British starters in the final, which would have been 5 had Terry not been suspended.

Aaron Ramsey has scored more Champions League goals for Arsenal than Toure has for us, while Bale and Rooney have both scored goals in CL finals in the past 5 years. Our entire club is stuck at second base; if it hadn't been for our English goalkeeper we would have been absolutely destroyed by a number of our European opponents in the past few years.

What the ruling would do is ensure more British players are granted the vital experience that the likes of Scholes, Bale and Rooney were all given that allowed them to become top level footballers.

Schneiderlin himself has had his game forged by English football, and has improved markedly with Premier League experience; joining a club like us would be the next natural step to see him become an elite level footballer. Dyke's vision is to see more domestic kids to get that kind of exposure early enough to gradually become top class players; Barry and Lescott were great for us in the league, but ultimately fell a bit short in Europe because they arrived at the top level too late. If we brought in the likes of Sterling, Barkley, Stones and Hughes and were patient enough to let them learn, by the time they reached their mid twenties we'd have some seriously talented, accomplished footballers on our hands.

The reason those British players got games was because they were good enough. Utd have used plenty of inferior British players since then, & ended up fucking most of them off because they are not good enough.

If young English were good enough, they would get games, just as Rodwell & Sinclair would have for City, had they been good enough. Milner starts almost all of our biggest games.

Dyke is talking through his arse. The problem isn't young Brittish players getting a chance, it's any young players getting a chance because of the amount of money which is at stake & the pressure on managers for instant & then continued success. The young English kids learn from playing alongside players from other countries. It's all coming together really well. Especially at City, where if someone had never seen them before, he wouldn't know which were the English or continental players by watching them play, as they all play pass & move football.

But there is no chance Dyke's idea will be backdated if it does come in. It will only be players who fail the criteria, after it comes in, who are ineligible.

They won't suddenly declare Clichy etc to be no longer 'homegrown'.

says this morning he wants to move to a champions league club, get it done city!! forget wilshere and get schneiderlin!

I don't think Schneiderlin would be a replacement target for Wilshere (though I still hope against hope that Jackie boy isn't a target in the first place) but I would like to see us move Fernando on and bring Schneiderlin in.

He wants a move, he's homegrown, he's a quality player who in my opinion is an improvement on what we currently have in a position that needs strengthened. It's a no-brainer for me.

I'm afraid we're not even considering him. We never seem to be mentioned.

Surely things like these rules have to be phased in

They can't just change the rules overnight & tell everyone that players who they have signed, expecting to be eligible, will not be afterall. People will have planned and budgeted.

If it ever does come in, they will set a date & it will apply to all playrrs signed after that date. Nobody signed now will fail to qualify.
