Mainly used by the Marines for getting in and out of tough places.......I thinkAre they actually used in combat operations or just as the freakshow at air displays?
Talking with a guy at the airport who'd been on a fast attack boat in the Navy, he was saying they've had a lot of problems with them starting fires when the motors are in the straight up position as the heat goes directly down. Also being way faster than a helicopter but way slower than any other aircraft, it's difficult for them to have any good back upV-22s have been used on ops all over the middle east and north africa. They replaced the Sea Knights about 10 years ago.
Very complex bit of kit.
