That's not correct. There is a circuit breaker for the CVR in the overhead panel behind one of the pilots. There are certain circumstances where the pilot should disable the CVR in flight - I doubt this was one of them.

A CVR will only record the most recent 2 hours of what can be heard in the flight deck after which the oldest recording is replaced by the newest. If an unusual event occurs more than two hours from the destination, for example a near miss or a technical fault causing an audible alert, it could help any investigation if the CVR recording was available, so a pilot may opt to remove power to prevent it being recorded over and lost.
