Roberto Mancini - next Italy manager

They've signed 3 promising, young Argentinians from Roma, Lyon and River Plate.

Apparently they're after another from Atletico too. Maybe they share the same agent.

Hopefully they advance to the latter stages of the Europa. Wouldn't mind watching a game.

Bob's tweet from last night:

And a link to some comments about the game on Zenit's English-language site: http://en.fc-zenit.ru/news/2017-08-...poblagodarit-bolelshchikov-za-podderzhku-.htm

The crowd was 53,359, so about 15K under capacity. Given that it was widely reported as being a sell out, they must have refused to open parts of the upper tier. Still a very big crowd for Russia, though. Spartak officially brought 5.5K, I believe, which again is an impressive travelling contingent.

They've signed the lad from Atletico as well, a 24-year-old defensive midfielder who went to Madrid from River Plate in January 2016. He spent last season on loan to Sevilla:

I've always hoped City will draw Zenit in Europe. But not this season, thanks, as it can only happen if we finish third in our CL group and drop into the Europa.

In other news, the Russian daily Sport Express is reporting that they may have to play a few games back at the Petrovsky. They closed the roof at the new stadium for the first time last week against Bnei Yehuda on a night when there was heavy rain and it leaked badly. The paper suggests that Zenit might have to move out again while the problem is fixed.

Just a note to say that Zenit have dropped their first league points under Mancini in an away midweek fixture against Ural in Ekaterinburg. It finished 1-1, with the home side taking the lead on 35 minutes and Zenit levelling on the hour. Zenit's official twitter feed quotes Mancini as blaming poor finishing.

Am still at work so have no more details than that. If I find anything interesting out later, I'll edit this post to add it.

Zenit just kicking off at home toAkhmat Grozny in front of a crowd the telly commentator estimates at 40K. Chance to go 3 points clear at the top after Lokomotiv Moscow's shock home defeat by Tosno earlier today. This lot are always tough opponents, though. Did the double over Zenit last season, including a 'park the bus and nick it on the break' in the second ever Zenit home game at the new stadium back in May.

Come on lads! Davai, Zenit!

Update: 1-0 Zenit on 27 minutes. FK into the wall, broke back to Paredes, who volleyed it - and a huge deflection wrongfooted the 'keeper.

Roberto will be getting to like these Sunday 8 pm KOs. After last week's stormer against Spartak, they won this one 4-0. After going one up after 27 minutes as described above, they saw their opponents reduced to ten men before the break; a player who'd already been booked was clearly fouled but the ref played on so he took matters into his own hands and rugby tackled his Zenit assailant.

Zenit duly scored early in the second half to really put the game to bed, and after that it was a question only of how many. The scored a further two but could have had more.

Leaves Zenit with 16 points from 6 games, three points clear of Rostov and Lokomotiv, with CSKA a further point back. Mancini's side have scored 15 (four more than the next most lethal attack) and conceded an equal lowest three. Early days yet, of course, but they do look the team to beat. He's certainly made a quick difference from the rather lacklustre style of last season. The commentators tonight said it was refreshing to see them looking to do something constructive every time they got the ball as compared with the rather ineffective, tippy-tappy style of the previous campaign.

One thing he's doing is getting rid of quite a few established players and bringing in the young Argentinians, plus a few of the club's own youth products. One more player who's leaving, according to tonight's commentary, is Javi Garcia, whom a few on here will no doubt remember. He's being loaned to Real Betis.

Next game for Zenit is in midweek away to Utrecht in the Europa League qualifier. Then it's away to Amkar Perm, currently bottom of the table with two points from six games, on Sunday afternoon.

Petrusha - thanks for these updates! It is interesting to see how RM is getting along obviously but also to hear about the Russian league in general. I think in the past BeIn Sports carried those matches and that should be watchable in one form or another in a lot of the world if still true.
