Before reading any of the other replies, my first thought after seeing that article is that she's adding flames to the fire and it's mindless of people to automatically applaud her for that.
Clearly the ranks of the EDL will be made up of racists or facist leaners but she's gone there to be provocative. If she wanted to do something about the situation of an EDL rally there she would have been more sensible to talk to them respectful of the issues they raise. Two sides on either side of the backgrounds of the issue might then begin to understand one another and do something productive to diminish the tensions that are there within our society whether you like it or not. The EDL aren't an extreme group out on the attack against immigrations so regardless of how much you may dislike them you're only making things worse for both sides and our society by being antagonistic.
It's in the social consciousness that the EDL are knuckle dragging, racist buffoons though so people in keeping with herd mentality automatically applaud any such attitude towards them when it's just as bad as the antagonistic members within the EDL. The EDL haven't done themselves any PR favours (even just with their name - "defence") but to resolve the tension with a good outcome people need to look past things like that to merely open communication.
