Something weird in football

Also, 11 players...

Where would you want to play, a long journey, stay in hotel then play infront of 40,000 who are singing for the opposition or play for 40,000 in your own team.

football is a team game also, if just 6/7 players prefer playing at home, lose 5% of their performance, that's a lot. While players playing at home, gain an extra buzz and more motivation, add performance by 5% and there you go.

Read an article on this question yonks ago (can't remember where), obviously there are several factors but the writer concluded one of the most important single factors was probably some primal territorialism (defending your home from attack) raising testosterone levels and giving the home side a psychological and physical boost.

So it's all in the mind

-- Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:43 pm --

But wouldn't you think in this day and age a lot more work should have gone into this if it was possible to change the mind set off a team just think off the advantage this would give you. Take amateur football as an example were you don't have 40000 opposition fans against you, teams still play with the same mentality so it can't be just put down to the effect of the home supporters .
