Southern Italy

Had a Uncle went on a paid for trip he hated it, full of Italians trying to be friendly and Germans trying to kill him.

Taormina definitely
If you ever go in summer try the aolian islands especially stromboli.

Got a cheap Ryanair flight to brindisi and did a drive round holiday last year, drove up to Matera in the next region of Brasilica,All the houses in the sassi area are caves, with stunning boutique cave hotels.if you like Venice at night when all the tourists have gone, you'll love here, good restaurants. The west coast of puglia has some stunning sand dune beaches and caters more for self-catering Italians, found a great fishmongers there where they cook what you order and you eat outside on old beer barrels with a bottle of wine for 30/40euros for two for sea urchins the lot etc. Stayed in the walled town of otranto on the east coast, very picturesque, more pricey with a little beach that at times stinks a bit due to the sulphur coming up through the seabed. Stunning holiday and will definitely do another drive round

Really good culture in Southern Italy. Mixture of the various people who have controlled the region: Greek, Roman, Fatimid Arab, Byzantine, Austrian Germanic, French, Spanish and of course the northern Italians. Otranto would be great for history as well, get to see where the Ottoman Turks conquered in the 1490s.
