The French Presidential Election

Snap. Supporting an out and out fascist shows clearly that some in this country has lost its fucking mind and memory.

Didn't we fight them during the war? Or was that the lefties we were fighting?

Le Pen is a fascist fucking scumbag. Like her dad.

Brexit 52% vs 48% will of the people
Trump 48% vs 52% great populist victory vs liberal elites
Macron 65% vs 35% strong right wing vote, uncertain times ahead for Macron.

The first two were a victory for something, the latter was a vote to stop Le Pen by various groups who are certainly not supporters of his, uncertain times indeed.
The biggest danger is that this vote sorted nothing and so the polarization will continue and harden, the point has been reached where there is no middle ground as such, its already been seen that the majority want a change of direction by the result of the first ballot where the existing parties got a spanking.

No it's not.

If road deaths are unavoidable accidents, why bother with road safety legislation and why bother improving the design of cars. Why are road deaths down by 75% from their 1970 peak when there's also twice as many cars on the road?

In reality reducing all types of early deaths is the responsibility of a government, whether it's on the road, through health care or by preventing terrorist attacks. The effort expended should be proportionate to the size of the problem.

Also saying that terrorism can be fully addressed is a load of bollocks.

But they are unavoidable, if you are driving in accordance to the law and someone runs out in front of you, what could you have done differently ?

Far better comparing the situation to a football ground or night club, if the clubs dont make efforts to keep the trouble makers out or let too many people in for the available facilities then they are held accountable.

How then is it any different when we are talking about the country, and the governments first duty is the safety of its people ?,

I think you've missed my point. By bringing in new legislation and by enforcing it, the chances of being killed on the roads has been reduced by 75% since 1970. Even using your example you're 75% less likely to be killed even if you're hit by a car at 30 mph because of improved car design and improved emergency health care. These are things that are influenced by what governments do as is the response to the threat of terrorism. All of these things need to be addressed by government and the effort made needs to be proportionate to the threat. The post that you agreed with appeared to be making the point that it was possible to totally eliminate the threat of terrorism and it was pointless expending any effort to reduce the risk of death by other causes. Both of those statements are wrong.
