The Prisons crisis

At least the government aren't so wedded to privatising at all costs, so that 15% of prisons are privately run. This is the largest proportion in the world. Disappointingly, for all haters of the public sector, the prisons with the most violence and rates of reoffending are all privately run. It seems that, to meet their budget constraints, officers are paid up to 20% less than the public sector officers. Recruitment of high calibrate officers has proven somewhat difficult in the privately run prisons. Who'd have thought it....?
G4S happily state they have 400 inmates working 40 hours a week for £2 a day. They also have the most overcrowding in their prisons (it's as they they get paid for the number inside, regardless of outcome or staffing levels.......)

There are some things that are simply better run by the state.

Nothing should be privatised at all costs, IMO. If a contract is put out on unrealistically low terms, and then overseen by the same incompetent dicks who ran down the service, it is unlikely to work very well.

Furthermore, as in other walks of life, you need to be careful what you pay for. So many unwanted behaviours are the result of ill-thought targets and incentives. The NHS is a classic example where managers chased official targets like puppies chasing a leaves...whilst killing people through unhygienic conditions.

As a taxpayer, who delivers the service is of secondary importance to me. Paramount are value, excellent service and accountability.

Mate of mine just come out of prison. Moved from forest bank to Risley to get a better chance of early release. FB privately run and cons likely to do whole sentence (more money of government). Risley offers early release (money saving for government)
Both have playstations.

Private prisons get paid on the basis of capacity.....thats why they provide cons

1) with treats so that they are not scared of going back
2) no skills training or education so that they can't get off the cycle of crime

If you look at Norway (closing prisons because there is no demand) they provide a full skills and education programme which the detainee has to attend
