Parents of family held captive in a California face charges of torture, child & adult abuse, false imprisonment and lewd acts on a child. Horrifying details released by prosecutors.

20:26

Asked: "Do you believe these people (the parents) should ever walk the streets again?"

District attorney Mike Hestrin replies "No".

20:22

District attorney Mike Hestrin says the lewd act was against a female

20:18

Asked why there are only 12 charges of torture but 13 children, district attorney Mike Hestrin says they are not going to charge torture on the two-year-old because "apparently the two-year-old was getting enough to eat"

20:14

District attorney Mike Hestrin: This is severe, emotional, physical abuse. There's no way around it. This is depraved conduct.

20:13

District attorney Mike Hestrin: At least one of the older victims attended college classes but his mother would accompany him, wait outside the classroom for him and when he was finished she would take him home.

20:09

Asked what the "lewd act" charge refers to, district attorney Mike Hestrin says: "We are alleging that David Turpin touched one of the victims in a lewd way by using force or fear."

20:07

Melissa Donaldson, director of victim services: There are multiple issues with all these children and they are going to need long-term help.

20:05

District attorney Mike Hestrin: They are severely hurt and damaged and we cannot cause them any further damage.

20:04

District attorney Mike Hestrin: We are fully prepared to seek justice but we have to do it in a way that protects these victims.

20:03

District attorney Mike Hestrin: It's a very complex case.

20:03

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The parents would buy food for themselves and not allow the children to eat it. They would buy food including pies, apple pies, pumpkin pies and leave it on the counter, let the children look at it, but not eat the food.

20:02

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The only thing the children were allowed to do was write in their journals - we have recovered those journals, hundreds of them, and are combing through them for evidence.

20:00

District attorney Mike Hestrin: When the 17-year-old was asked if there was medication or pills in the home, she didn't know what medication or pills were.

20:00

District attorney Mike Hestrin: They lack a basic knowledge of life - many of the children didn't know what a police officer was.

19:59

District attorney Mike Hestrin: They were not allowed to have toys, but there were many toys that were found in the house that were in their original packaging and had never been opened.

19:58

District attorney Mike Hestrin: When they were not chained up, the children were locked in different rooms and fed very little and on a schedule.

19:57

District attorney Mike Hestrin: None of the victims have seen a doctor in more than four years, and none of them have ever seen a dentist.

19:57

District attorney Mike Hestrin says punishments would include frequent beatings and strangulation.

19:56

District attorney Mike Hestrin says it is important to add that this is all "alleged conduct"

19:56

District attorney Mike Hestrin: One of the reasons the children were punished and chained to the bed was if they washed their hands above the wrist area - they were accused of playing in the water and they would be chained up.

19:53

District attorney Mike Hestrin: None of the victims were allowed to shower more than once a year.

19:53

District attorney Mike Hestrin: Several of the victims have cognitive impairment and nerve damage as a result of this extreme and prolonged physical abuse.

19:52

District attorney Mike Hestrin: One of the children aged 12 is the weight of an average seven-year-old.

19:51

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The victims are suffering from severe caloric malnutrition associated with muscle wasting

19:46

District attorney Mike Hestrin: All the victims were and are severely malnourished.

19:45

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The abuse and severe neglect intensified over time.

19:43

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The family lived in Texas for 17 years and moved to California in 2010, and then to their current residence in 2014

19:41

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The neglect and abuse started when the family lived in Texas with the parents at one point living separately from the children and occasionally dropping off food.

19:39

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The 17-year-old who escaped had escaped with a sibling who became afraid and turned back.

19:38

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The 17-year-old who escaped had been working on an escape plan with her siblings for two years.

19:38

District attorney Mike Hestrin: Evidence in the house suggests the victims were not unchained to go to the bathroom.

19:37

District attorney Mike Hestrin: Three victims were chained up when the police arrived at the home - aged 11, 14 and 22.

19:35

District attorney Mike Hestrin: These punishments would last for weeks or even months at a time.

19:34

Chains and padlocks

District attorney Mike Hestrin: The victims said as a punishment they would be tied up with ropes but when they were able to escape their parents began using chains and padlocks.

19:32

District attorney Mike Hestrin: These individuals sleep all day and are up all night. All 13 victims and the defendants would go to sleep around four or five in the morning and sleep all day.

That is heart breaking to read, jesus christ.

Fuck jail, id strangle them with my own hands and i would not stop until i felt things give and crack under my fingers. These vile things gave up their right to any compassion a long time ago and i would give them none either. Seriously, chuck them off a cliff, simple.

So so sad for the kids. They will probably never recover from this. Wtf is wrong with people that would want to do this? Hope the so called parents never see the light of day again.

There’s nowt so queer as folk!
This. Every time I hear a story like this, that's the one thing that springs to mind. The world is a fucked up place, and it's all down to human beings. The world would be a beautiful place, but we're wankers and we're fucking it right up.
