A defender will not score that regular first or second goal, and unless we buy a completely new back four of the best defenders in the world and play ultra defensive, defenders won't help, especially with how we play.
Priority transfers are goal scorers, all day long. The reason we're not winning games is because we're not scoring enough, why? Because we have to many creators and not enough natural goal scorers, who get into those goal scoring positions.
Chelsea, Everton, Southampton, Boro at home, all of them we could of won had we scored that second goal. Its not like we didnt create enough in some of those games. That wouldve be another 9 points and we'd be in a different position.
We've seen us win the league twice.
First time, we won the league, we had 3 forwards who were near or over the 15 goal mark, Aguero, Dzeko, Ballotelli. We had 4 midfielders who scored over 5 goals, Yaya, Silva, Nasri and Johnson. Tevez came back late in the season from his sabbotical to add 4 goals in the last few games too.
Second time, we had 3 forwards and a midfielder who were near or over the 20 mark, Yaya, Aguero, Dzeko. Another forward on 10, Negredo, and 3 midfielders who scored over 5 goals, Silva, Nasri and Fernandinho.
When we struggled in these seasons, it was because our forwards were out of form or injured. We played a similar way to how we play now, but yet we found that second goal more often.
Last two years, we've had one goal scoring forward, Aguero. Now, we have no Nasri, Silva lacks goals, no more goals from Toure. KDB not scoring, Gundogan injured, lack of goals from anyone else (apart from maybe Nolito)... Navas...nope.
Fact is, we need 3 players to hit near the 15- 20 mark. If that happens, we won't need any defenders in the short term, as we'll play deeper when were 2 up, bring on another DM and see the points through. Just like Mancini used to do so often, 2 upfront to start with, then bring one off for a midfielder to see the game through with possession.
The consitent best teams in the world always have 2-3 scorers achieving 20+, Barca, Real, Bayern.
In the long term, we could be ok, as Iheancho could grab 15 a season, hopefully GJ can too. Also I'd expect more goals from Sane and Sterling. But they're not going to do it right now, and maybe none of them will. Right now we need another 20 goal a season forward, and maybe even another 10 goals a season midfielder/winger.
So until we put are money down on a goal scorer or GJ is an instant success 20+ goals a season, I wouldn't expect too much to change by buying a defender.
