A long time ago I used Dreamweaver to put together several websites. Now I no longer work so don’t have access. Anyone know of any decent open source web development tools?

what sort of level are you needing? Simple html web pages or more complex interactive pages?

there are a number of services that allow quick creation of websites with E-Commerce etc etc.

I don't think there's anymore mainstream Frontpage/Dreamweaver/ExpressionWeb platforms

Nowadays I either hardcode on notepad, or resort to WYSIWYG platforms. I use Wordpress and Magento a lot. A bit of Drupal and Joomla but for now with the support and the addons nothing beats the user friendly interface of Wordpress. Having strong background in HTML helps in fine tuning these installs and diagnosing bugs.

I hate Wix but mancity uses it, and from the videos of it it seems a drag and drop web editor. never tried it though

yeah knocking up a quick page like that I'd just use something like Notepad++ or textPad. they both had add ons or built in support for syntax of HTML/JavcaScript.

If you need the drag and drop help for positioning graphics you could do it in work ( if you have it ) and export to HTML than add the java script by hand.

if you do start to go down the rabbit hole and want more advanced stuff there is Visual Studio Web edition you can download for free. but that is very expansive and would probably hinder rather than help at the start.

there do seem to be a few alternatives to dreamweaver out there, but i've never touched them so cant say which is best.
