I think they are ribbons, folk used to use them to tie socks up before the time of tape.

I imagine they went out of use because they served absolutely no purpose whatsoever. I mean, for whose benefit was it to have tiny little numbers on the players' socks?

Maybe not, but they were still f**king mint. Had a pair myself, back in the day - felt like a real pro wearing those bad boys.
