In this world of crazy transfer fees, why are goalkeepers so (comparatively) cheap?

Isn't a top class keeper essential for a team wanting to win anything?

Isn't the goalie one of the three(?) most important positions on the pitch for a manager to get right?

Buffon went for far and away the biggest transfer fee, everybody else circa £20 mill tops. Talk of Joe going for £20 mill, when de Gea almost went (wish he had) that was allegedly for £25 mill (admittedly with only 1 season left on contract)

Top defender - £50 mill
top midfielder - £90 mill
top goalscorer - 3 (sorry, 9)figures?

Joe Hart can arguably claim to be in the top 5 in the world in his position, so why isn't his transfer fee in the region of £75 mill?

It's the second hand value that is always poor.

Hart isn't in the top 5 keepers in the world atm. Maybe not even in the top 10, if we are being honest.

  1. Neuer
  2. Buffon
  3. Bravo
  4. De Gea
  5. Courtois
  6. Lloris
  7. Cech
  8. Keylor Navas
  9. Ter Stegen
  10. Oblak
  11. Hart
  12. Enyeama
  13. Mandanda
  14. Leno
You cant just put Bravo in the top 3 now he is in all around considered less of a keeper than De Gea, Lloris and probably Cech. Would probably have Courtois down a bit further after his past 18 months as well
Buffon is No1 until he retires a swell Neuer can do all the sweeping he likes Buffon owns the penalty area so much he doesnt need to do 40yd sweeper tackles
