Was it the white "barrels" of the roof stacked up on each other in piles?
If so yeah that was it!
I used to go to watch demolition 2 or 3 times a week, armed with my camera.
And with the roof - the only way they could get it down was to cut the 2 support beams pitch side and all the way along the outside edge facing the road too, and it was kind of just balanced on top... and diggers with chains pulled it forward in one go onto where all the seats used to be (it was quite a sight! To see the roof go in only 20 seconds!).
Anyway, the barrels were took apart section by section and a fork lift truck left them on the platt lane car park for a month or so, stacked up in groups of about 10 per pile. I'm pretty sure the gateman said they were going to be took somewhere else for disposal, not sure if it was an asbestos isses or something else. (When the north stand came down they found asbestos and had to shut down demolition for 24 hours while they got specialists in).
Anyway, how to sound a like a geek eh!!!
Sorry!
In answer to your question - yeah, it sounds like the roof was took there for storage til they could get rid another way. I'm sure i heard someone else say that it ended up being a field :)
Thanks mate.
happy to help :)
While i'm in geek mode, i had a nosey round the comp for a picture, but all my high res originals are on disc so all i could find was a tiny tiny low res shrunk one i must have shared someplace else before.
So here'd a picture i took of the main stand roof piled up in the platt lane car park, April 2004.
here endeth my geeky posts, i swear ;)
