Thought I'd start the annual "let's wake up the next day and shout at the OP for being a bellend and jinxing the derby" thread.
30th April, the day we play United, in our biggest derby for how long? The culmination of our struggle back from the depths of despair when we're nearly folded, dissappeared, no more. We rose again, and we fought back to the edge of the summit, to the edge of victory, fighting for the good in football and for Manchester, against our evil, morally corrupt adversaries just across the city border. They, run by a powerful and much feared man, who saw fit to destroy Liverpool's empire and build one of his own, poaching talent, paying more than anyone else, controlling the media and their dominance was born, anyone who stood in their path was crushed, and any tragic moment in their past was turned into an opportunity to suit the agenda of the present administration.
Remind you of anything?
30 April 1945-the day Hitler put a bullet through his head, his empire, so dominant, so brutal, so evil. He tried to put his little enemy the Brits down and out for good, the rivals, the country who had played such a major part in beating his beloved Germany the first time. They may have finally taken France(Liverpool), and crushed them, but Britain(City) survived The Blitz, the German dominance and fought back, and now we've landed on the beaches, and we're approaching Berlin, they're worried, the fear, the nerves, they've never encountered this before, forget Arsenal, forget Blackburn, forget Chelsea, hell forget Liverpool, this is something else, this City, the rivals they forgot to hate, and now who they can't forget to fear. This is rivalry, this is war, and we're primed to strike the knockout blow.
Europe has crushed them, just like the USSR did to the Nazis, until the point where all they have is this, this is everything to them now, it's all they have, and it's what we can take away from them. Who will believe in a Fergie when every myth and legend that has painted him up to be the greatest has been stripped away, where he can no longer trundle through Europe against mediocre sides before falling "valiantly" at the final hurdle. Where he can't bully little teams into giving him easy points, where managers and players who lived in fear, or with too much respect, have woken up and smelt the coffee and taken him on, and succeeded.
We win on monday, and follow it up, we strike the big blow. We fail, and we give them the get out of jail card, we give them the edge, the energy and don't give ourselves the boost we need to go on to the next level, we give them a stay of execution and put that doubt back in everyone else's mind of "can they really be stopped?", we should give credit to the Steve Kean's and Moyes's of this world who stood up and fought them, and we should give them hope that they can go there year after year and succeed, break down that wall for them and in return steal the bricks and build our own.
Germany bounced back, so will United. Fergie will probably continue, but how long does he have left? the one thing that has protected him for so long is he never had a true rival, he never had an enemy so close to his club's heart, Chelsea was different, Arsenal was different, Liverpool have barely threatened, it's been false, fake, this is something else, this is real, we're giving them the rivalry that for so many years they've missed out on, and boy don't they know it.
Forget the cheese, forget the but plugs, forget the black trim on our new home kit, that will be us respectfully mourning(something they've never managed btw) United's failed attempts to hold us off for one more year. We go into the final battle on monday night, and the only thing we can fear is fear itself. We are better than them, we have categorically proved it, there is no doubt of that. Words on a page mean nothing except to those who choose to let themselves be affected by them, there is no such thing as mind games, just mental weakness and self doubt. What is there to doubt when you know you are better than the man you are staring at across the white line? Nothing.
Everyone put us down for us having "an 8 point lead", well so did they, and they, if we do what we should do on monday night, will have blown it in 3 weeks. Unlike Hitler and the Nazis we can't rid the world of them on monday night, no matter how much we would like to, but we can start to change the whole mindset of everybody who follows football, and most importantly we can change their mindset, and continue to expose the weaknesses that have been slowly stripping them bare for the past couple of years.
Their dominance is at an end folks, the aura is fading, and we, who have been through so much shit just to survive, are the ones fortunate enough to strike the first truly major blow, at home, where it really hurts.
Let this not be the Carling Cup semi final, let this not be the 4-3, let this be the FA Cup Semi-final, and let us like last year, follow it up. Let it be glory, the sweetest tasting glory we've ever known.
Roberto, Vinnie, lads, you know what to do.
Blues, have faith, we know what we're doing...I think, and if not on my head be it and let Typical City descend this board into mourning and squabbles all next week(you'll find me on twitter if that happens), but in all seriousness let's just enjoy it, we win, great, we lose, oh well, go take a look at your family, your home, your pets, your prized collection of but plugs or talking cats, whatever floats your boat, and remember, although City is extremely important in life, some things are just a little more important.
Have faith, enjoy, but let's stick it to 'em!
