City spent as freely as anyone, but wiser than most, during the Mercer-Allison era.

You could also argue that Joe came in when City were in the old First Division (now Championship) and when he left City after a relegation, two promotions and another relegation were still in the same Division.

It took Mercer-Allison three years to win the League Championship, four years to win the FA Cup and five years to win the League Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup. They also got out of the (then) Division Two in their first season.

Manchini took eighteen months to win the FA Cup and two and a half years to win the Premier League. He needs to deliver at least one more domestic trophy and one European cup (preferably the Champions' League) within the next two years.

Manchini has a great team, as had Mercer and Allison. The question remains can he manage the transition better than Allison did in the early 1970s. Fortunately the current team is comparatively young so this is not an immediate priority.

Next year, the target must be to retain the Premier League, progress to at least the semi-finals of the Champions' League and win a domestic Cup. However Mancini will eventually be judged on the teams' success or otherwise in the Champions' League.

Are you shrek by any chance?

He's spelt RM's surname that way on twatter, the thick bastard!

Joe / Mal's record:

Season three: League
Season four: FA Cup
Season five: Domestic and European Trophy.

Mancini's record:

Season three: FA Cup
Season four: League
Season five: Domestic and European Trophy?

Let's hope so.

As soon as he leaves and we have an underwhelming manager.

But the CL would do it for me. Don't know how I'd react seeing the words "Manchester City" etched on football's greatest prize.

Probably win the league a couple more times and go far in the CL. I would think.

In all fairness though you can't compare the eras

Across the whole of the game, comparisons are pretty fruitless. Across the generations they are a waste of time. Stuff to dream about. I'm sure that Dave Ewing would have kept Vinnie or Joleoninho on the bench for much of the season, and would Joe H get a game with Bert able to catch anything with one hand?

a) win a second title
b) have better hair
c) win the Champions League
d) a combination of all three.

D has always been my favourite letter.

...to the question...

"Who is city's greatest ever Manager?"

I wasn't around in the mercer era, so for me it will be one of the following...

If he wins the league 2 more times or
If he wins the champions league
If he wins the league/fa cup double

(Apologies if there's already been a similar post...I don't recall one)

3 more trophies.
Mercer won 4 major trophies, Mancini has won 2.
