@LC he doesn't play defence because Bielsa thinks he's better there. He was the best option they had to bolster it.

They have other good midfielders, so they were fine in that department.

Why doesn't Bielsa play him in midfield then? He's virtually converted him full-time to CB.

If we signed him and T Silva then that's the defense sorted well and truly. With these 2 we could let go of Savic, Boyata, Kolo, Cunningham, Bridge (I know theses 2 aren't CBs), Pizzaro, Hargreaves (already gone) and from midfield MJ and one from Milner or DeJong. Surely the collective income from these would raise enough for Martinez and the wage savings would be huge. And of course our squad would be massively improved.
