We're definitely light on home-grown players, just squeaking by on the bare minimum of 8 I think (excluding kids). Barry is 32 in Feb, Taylor probably has a job for life at City at the moment as 3rd choice keeper and Lescott is 30 in a couple of months.

Taylor, Richards, Clichy, Barry, AJ, Milner, Hart and Lescott.

Obviously we are looking abroad at all this top talent but I think we should be picking up 1 or 2 home-grown 1st team/regular squad players - the problem is who? They need to be decent enough to not look out of place in our side.

We are extremely unlikely to sign anyone from the scum and chelsea (Sturridge maybe but not convinced he'd a) come back or b) we'd want him, I can't think of any english player in Liverpool or Newcastle's squad we'd want. Arsenal is a possibility but we'd pay through the nose for one of their kids. For Tottenham read Arsenal comment. That pretty much leaves the lower 13 clubs and/or lower league players.

Anyone got any idea's about english championship players who may make it OR english players from PL teams that could be convinced to sell - I'm struggling to think of many. Obviously some signings would be dependent on players leaving e.g. a striker so we could sign Bent or a LB to sign Baines.

Villa - Darren Bent (not a popular choice but guaranteed goals when fit)
Everton - Baines, (not sure on Barclay or Rodwell)
Arsenal - Ramsay, Wilshere (doubt we'd get these)
QPR - Onuoha (would look daft but would be a decent squad CB/RB at least - never going to happen)

Didn't realise there would be so few but I've maybe missed some out. Any other suggestions?

Edit: Changed title :-)

Please not Ramsey. Their own fans don't even want him!

He's Welsh anyway.

Good post, highlights the fact that moving no any of the above is not as straight forward as you first think. I think out of those 8, only Taylor and AJ may drop out, Taylor would likely be to free up a space, if a younger goalie came through with enough promise,

AJ is being linked with the scum, Liverpool, and Sunderland by the media, but we let him go and we need to buy someone who qualifies to get the rota up to the required level again. Whilst it doesn't necessarily have to be a direct replacement (a Redmond, Walcott or a Ramsey type midfielder for example), it would have to be someone of decent enough quality to command a place in our named squad, and, you're right, it's slim pickings.

Should never had sold nedum if mancini played him in that semi theres a good chance we would have won the league cup.
Other young talents that we have been linked with include redmond and nathan clyne. There are some players from crewe like clayton and powell who look excellent although I don't think we have been linked.

That would be like saying that Clichy is French so doesn't count, when he does. ;)

When the title of the thread is English talent, I think it's an alright statement to make.

this will be a short thread, I had this discussion when some bloke at work who said we needed to buy English players, my response was which English player could actually make our squad better? Wiltshire and rooney, maybe chamberlain could be worth a punt but thats about it as far as I'm concerned and I'm actually not sure that rooney is as good as his reputation suggest.

Yes, it's a bit misleading.

His post is about home-grown players.

Keep saying this, Kelly from Liverpool he can play RB and CB. Sell Kola and move Zab to LB. we could even do a swap deal using AJ and put the Kola cash towards Martinez
