Thought this guy deserves a thread, for me THE most talented bass player ever, I think he was the first to take the frets off his Fender electric bass as he said they slowed him down like speed bumps :)

Its an absolute crime he was beaten up badly by a bouncer in his 30's and never regained conciousness, died a few days later , a big loss to the world of music.

I love solo Jaco records and his work with Weather Report

Haven't listened to him for a good few years...

... I did get to see Victor Wooten is the flesh a few years back, another who's technical past the point of comprehension.

Indeed

I read a piece by his daughter, she was about 5 when he was killed, she said the guy who beat him up has never once shown any remorse or apologised in any way, its very sad, he got off with manslaughter and got away with a year or so in jail.

Loved Weather Report. Got 3 LPs. Fantastic and interesting band.

The bouncer only served 4 months in jail. Pastorius was homeless at the time, I think. He was quite the character, being banned at many venues. He thought he was still a star, but his career had been over for some time.

It wasn't anything random that happened to him. He was acting a twat.

Funny how many think the two women in that McDs video got what they deserved, but Pastorius was somehow an innocent victim. Double standards? Seems to be.

White jazz musician- such a shame
Black lesbians- deserved it.

Oh I dont think he was innocent for 1 minute :) but surely a slap or two wouldve sufficed, his facial injuries were horrific apparently, your right that he did act badly in his later years but its well documented that he suffered with bi-polar disease (a severe mental illness) so maybe he just couldnt help it, living on park benches supports this, he must have just drifted away like Peter Green & Syd Barrett, most friends say he changed almost into a different person.

also I would never say that black lesbians deserve anything bad at all .

Yeah, sorry. I edited that stuff out as it had no place in this thread. Didn't mean to accuse you, specifically, of anything. I wanted to make a point, but got it out very poorly.

I've read that Jaco was clean living due to something about his father, but one of the guys in Weather Report convinced him to ha e a drink and immediately regretted it. Alcohol didn't agree with Jaco Pastorius.

Apologies, I realize that the other stuff didn't belong in this thread and edited my post.

Perhaps not the place to argue mental health diagnostic semantics, and sorry to correct the previous poster, but Bipolar Disorder is the term.

Affects 1% of the population and accounts for 0.5% annual UK mortality.
