I'm having a debate on another forum.
My main point I'd try to make was the fact that Man Utd have bought the league with all their spending. One fan has pulled this up:
http://www.tips-for-excel.com/data-visuals/tableau-public/premier-league-spend-by-season/To disprove Uniteds spending but for me it doesn't seem right. United have spent £millions from Stam, Veron, Porborsky, RVP, Rooney etc....
Any thoughts?
The thing with net/gross spend is that it doesn't take all the factors into account. Take the spend for United at the start of the Prem, would Keane or Hughes have cost less than 7 mil if it was in todays money? Also, the people who like to quote these things actually forget that the holding club still have an asset in that individual, ie. Aguero is still worth his original price while Kompany has probably trebled his, and what about Micah and Hart, how much would they be worth.
Another thing that needs to be factored in is that money gains money in football. Those at the top have had more money than the rest through the CL etc and have been able to pick the best from other clubs, as well as ask top money for their semi-decent cast-offs.
It's all relevent, just don't go with the net spend scenario, you'll only win that one in about 20 years time.
