Yesterday on Twitter, Peter Reid was doing a Q & A thing and I asked him how good Lakey was, to which he replied "awesome".
Somebody else asked him "who was the best player he had at City" and he replied "Lake" (to which Lakey later replied, thanking Reidy for saying him)
Another asked him "who is the best player you have ever managed, his response..... "Lake"

Lakey - as we all know is a hero at City, but as I wasn't old enough to appreciate him at the time.

Without our Blue tinted glasses, what do you guys remember of him?? Was he as good as people say (I mean that question with total respect) and what games can any of you recall where he stood out.

I've seen the 5-1 many many times and he played a big part there, I know he was in the original 40 man squad for Italia 90, I'm just curious because I feel I don't know as much about him as a player as I should do.

he was brilliant and as such would have played regular for england, he would have been a player in the gascoigne/linekar fame in my opinion. sadly for us i think we would have cashed in on him. shame that we'll never know

The term future England captain is bandied about too often for my liking but in Paul Lakes case it was true.
He'd get into our current team, that's how good he was.

Just to bring one perspective - I went to about half a dozen games live in 1988/89 and he never really made any impression on me at all -probably because he was playing at right back. I didn't see much of the following season save on TV and - again because he often played in less glamorous positions - he never grabbed a great deal of attention. The sum of this is to say that he wasn't a headline grabber or someone who stood out for doing extraordinary things - but someone who real football people really appreciated.

Think of a cross between Colin Bell, Steven Gerrard and Yaya Toure. Does that say how good he was? Never realised his potential due to injuries but would have captained England. And a true loyal blue to boot!

I have a lasting memory of him ghosting through the Liverpool defense at Main Road.
He was respected throughout the game as a very good footballer.

Funnily enough I can't remember him scoring as many goals as he did, funny things memories.
