Might have been an ageing football ground but it did have atmosphere as opposed to match day experience suppose times move on miss it though and lads i use to stand with great times.

I remember that game. There was a similar one a few years earlier when Billy MCNeil came back with ASton Villa.

That Villa game is one that often gets overlooked. He's left us mid-season for a bigger and better club (and more money) - Villa fans would do well to remember that when pontificating about Barry and Milner doing the same.

The atmosphere was fantastic that day. I think the kick off was slightly delayed because the Villa team bus was held up because of a fatality on or around Princess Parkway iirc.

The vitriol towards McNeill was a stark contrast from the way he was lauded by our fans prior to his departure. I remember one song about his daughter in particular.

I think we won 3-1 that day and I seem to recall one of our goals should have been flagged for offside.

The Kippax was rocking that afternoon.

The whole experience of going Maine Road, with the kippax, was completely different to a modern day football experience.

We use to enter the ground around 2 oclock, stand near the away fans (above the white tunnel), and trade songs with the away fans an hour before the game. Although young we certainly weren't the only ones.

its not that bad doing a bit of reminising surely.

i seen more atmosphere in the saint johns ambulance tent at the back of the kippax, than at some of the home games at the etihad in the last few years.

but your right the futures bright

There were plenty.

This was the Villa game you mention, and this was the Everton one mcfc-a-ok refers to. Sadly we've only got highlights for the Everton one.

i had some of the best times of my life in the kippax.

my top 3 memories were

the responce of the newcastle fans when the king made his comeback, very warm hearted people.

rags 4-0.

boro 4-0.

the boro match was that the league cup semi final, night game the atmosphere was amazing,i remember doing your,ll never walk alone with every scarf in the ground held up.great night.

That was a good night. Everyone was nervous at the start but remember it being packed (as usual) and little Ged Keegan got us on our way very early on, if I remember rightly. The place went daft. I think I went to Ayresome Park for the first leg and we lost 1-0. (Tough place to go, believe me, for players and fans!) I saw Ged at a City Old Boys golf day last year and thanked him for that precise, and very precious, moment. He remembers it fondly. I think he scored two that night.

Just the one for Ged, I'm afraid!

I stood on the Kippax from 1970 , to the year it became seated , and had many a great time on there ....... from the times when we chased Birmingham , United , Spurs , Leeds and West Ham fans out of there ..... to the times when it was so packed you couldn't have swung your prick about , even if you'd wanted to!

Of course we HAVE to move on , the ground had becaome 'dated' , and had become too small for a club who were after going places ........ but the memories of Maine Road , and the Kippax , will forever live on in the minds of everyone who made it their 'home ' for so long.

Yes, the Villa coach collided with a car on the Parkway and there was a fatality.
McNeill resigned from City after 7 games of the 86 / 87 season, the Villa game was in November 86.
Moulden scored twice - the suspicion was McNeill never fancied the youth team players that won the youth cup the previous season.... thought it was too early for them.... (which he may have been right...)

At the end of the season, both Villa and City were relegated... Villa bottom and McNeill getting Deadly Doug's notorious bullet.
