The positive thread.

was it such a disaster going out last night, lets face it, with our defence (except stones) we were never going to win the champions league and now we free dates up to catch up on league games with no distraction leading up to the semi final at Wembley and concentrate on 2nd place at the least.

we can win the fa cup as can all the teams left in it, if we did and finished 2nd I would be very happy, 12 months under pep with players getting to know his ways better and a defence bringing in this summer we can really push on.

we cannot keep missing as many chances as we do so hopefully that can improve, we will then be equipped to have a real go at the champions league next year and the premier league too

You can only have so many seasons treading water in terms of results, pep certainly gets more time due to it being his first season and his stature. The game is about the league and the champions league. At what point the owner starts to think he is doing his part but others aren't is open to conjecture. He has a lot of patience that's for sure.

nope. peps first season in charge, with a squad that isn't really his. cup semi final, last 16 in the champions league, top 4 finish. thats pretty good going so far. some of our fans have lost all sense of perspective, they want instant success and can't handle not winning now. if we dont win the league or the champions league its now a failure.... this is a long term project that needs time.

but then again i think these same fans that moan about everything didn't like pelle, mancini or hughes. haha

3rd in PL on goal difference, semi FAC, last 16 ECL (out on away goals to top scoring team in Europe) 6-0 up in FA Youth Cup semi, City Women Champions, Some of the most exciting young players in world football, with more to come and one of the best managers in world football.

good post.

We'll know in a week. It's not losing, it's losing just before the run of games we have. If this starts a run of losses that sees Liverpool and Arsenal gain points on us and we get knocked out of the FA Cup, then yes it's a disaster.

Personally, I'd be more than happy right now with top 3 and an FA Cup final appearance, so these are crucial weeks ahead.

Had we gone through, we'd have been up against Leicester, Barcelona, Madrid, Dortmund, Bayern or Juventus, so it's not too big a deal.

Things aren't in general, no. But 5-3 up and the tactics and personnel in last night's game as an individual game; yes it was an atrocious night for the club!

I feel as though Pep is playing catch up in terms of knowing this team/club and that's frustrating.

OR

He's pushing this squad to it's limits, trying to determine who can up their game to the top level and earn their place for the future, and actually he's a genius.

One of the two, can't decide.

None of us ever likes to see them lose so on that basis last night was bad. We also know that we will get a lot of shit in the media that we will now have to soak up, again on that level it is bad.
But most city fans, if they are honest, will understand what is going on at the club at the moment and just how good we could become once the players get fully behind what Pep is trying to get them to do. They have shown many glimpses of that and will only get better at it.
So not a good day today but certainly the possibility of some very good times to come.

Seen enough at times to think we are heading towards something special with Pep. Sane, Sterling and Jesus will keep getting better and no doubt Pep has the players identified to get us to that level and consistancy. So even though last night was gutting, i hope for much better next season.

My Sister gets married on 3rd June so I now don't have to end up disowned by my family had we got to Cardiff

Thanks for that (sincerely). Need some positivity. Don't think we would have won chimps league either with or defence. If no major surgery is performed on it this Summer we've no chance of winning anything in the near future. We need new keeper (Hart has no chance of coming back) two full backs and a decent centre half to partner stones.

No, things aren't so bad.
One good thing to come out of this season is that hopefully it'll stop all that blind belief nonsense in Pep as the greatest manager ever and maybe make people a little more realistic.
His past record is obviously more than good but it's only his time at City that i give a damn about and i can't be the only one who expected a little more this season.
No manager in the history of the game has gone into a new club and had a completely new squad of players of his choosing. Sometimes you have to make do with what you have and then in time strengthen.
I believe he'll come good but people shouldn't be shot down in flames if they question Pep, there really is no guarantee that he'll be successful.

Still more room for improvement, and a few of our favourites races' have been run but nope we only went out on away goals.

I remember after our 2012 league triumph Vincent saying we could win 5 on the bounce. I would be interested to know where our inspirational skipper thinks we have made mistakes. It will be one league in 5 after this year despite spending hugely on players. So I think it is fair to say we have not kicked on.

After Pellegrini's first year things have gone down hill pretty badly. The reasons for that have been done to death elsewhere.

We have however spent heavily again this season adding to a team that won the LC and got to the CL semi final last year. If we come top 3 and reach the FA cup final playing entertaining football then the season won't have been disastrous.

I should emphasise the word entertaining because it seems to me Pep is more afraid of playing boring football than losing, not something you could accuse Mourinho or Conte of.

I honestly thought we were going to win it this year.

I'm sick and fucking tired of people saying we're not ready to win the CL yet
That to me is the biggest load of old bollocks spouted
I'm with you mate. We are good enough and all our players are experienced enough
They've all got big game experience and our most senior players should be looking at that game last night and be absolutely pig sick

In answer to the OP's question, yes they are because that last night was a horrendous defeat

Not at all. We lost to a very good side on AWAY goals. It was close and they just edged it. Frankly we know our defence isn't good enough and we knew at the start of the season we are a level below Bayern, Madrid and Barca. We've shown at home at least we can beat the big teams (Barca, Monaco) and we have some of the best young footballers in the prem, if not the world. We sign a couple of Jesus and Sane's in defensive positions in the summer and the future is very bright.

Pep is 100% the right manager and one of the best in the world. He isn't a miracle worker. Once people accept that they will enjoy the ride much more.
