Virgil van Dijk

Fair point but I think we will always overpay for a few targets. On top of that, if Van Dijk ends up at Liverpool then it shows that other clubs will overpay for the top talent. As admirable a stance as it is (although a bit late in the day to start), if everyone else overpays for the top talent then we're left paying reasonable sums for mediocre talent.
Not necessarily. It does mean we will not get some overpaid targets, but it doesN't mean reasonably summed players would be mediocre. Likely case in point, Bernado Silva. Neither mediocre nor overpaid.

And if we need a role model, we need not look farther than the Champions League finalist 2 of the last 4 years, Juventuss. They acquire very good talent on the cheap. All the time. Its embarrassing watching how they make the rest of Europe's top clubs look like mugs :(

Reading the last 25 or so pages, its amusing to see how many care about the money. Strange coz when I brought it up in the Juventuss LB thread, the consensus was that no one cared about the money.

Judging by the responses on this thread, it seems so many do. Even including some who claimed not to on other threads. Anyway, as has been so overwhelmingly confirmed, yes 60 millions is ridiculous. And I'm shocked anyone is spending it on a defender.

For my money think things altered after the champions league final on saturday.with Bonnuci realising hed probably achieved all he could with Juve.
Also chuck Pep into the mix being released by Madrid

I guess we'll have to see what happens with our reinforcements.

If, hypothetically speaking, we downgraded from Mendy to Bertrand over a few million then that's bad business. If we were to downgrade on Van Dijk by either accepting what we already have or by bringing back Mangala because of Virgil's large price tag then that is bad business. If we were to downgrade from Walker to Aurier because we got fed up with waiting for Levy then that is atrocious business.

Again, for the sake of those looking to smother any conversation, that's all hypothetical but what I'm saying is that the rumoured compromise in terms of specific players and backup options is a bit of a staggering drop off at this point. Like I said yesterday, Van Dijk certainly isn't the be all and end all but he is a superb player. If we have looked away because there is another available player of the same standard for less, then so be it. If the alternative is that we keep what we have then we're fucking idiots.

One more time; lot's of 'ifs'. This summer will be fascinating.

And don't get me started on Italian teams and their bargains. We can't and won't compete in that department.

Your picking and choosing the posts quite a few us saying we not happy we not getting Vvd money wise Im consistent I don't give a toss how much if the player improves us. Liverpool are getting a great player lets see the fee we were quoted Liverpool pay if they do good luck to them its dog eat dog.

I wouldn't quite say all the time, look at Higuain I think he is in the top three transfer fees of all time and neither the best in the world nor young, their keeper is the most expensive keeper of all time. They do pick up some bargains as well though I agree, but I think they have older players than could cope in the Premier league collectively (partly our problem this season)

It's a strange call by Klopp. He's not got the best centre backs but he doesn't have a particularly leaky defence. How many fewer goals will Liverpool concede as a result of this investment? I think a quality front man would net far greater value and points to that team. If they have circa £150m to spend Liverpool really need to spend most of it on a 25 goals a season striker.

I really like the way we've leaked our lack of interest. I've said it before. Our strategy is clearly to tie up the player first and then negotiate with the club as the sole buyer, rather than an auction. Obviously that hasn't happened here and I like the way we've killed the "Van Dyk prefers Liverpool" narrative. That might even have been his agent trying to push City for more cash or an offer, but regardless, I put this down as a sensible leak. Not overly bothered to miss out on him.

Yep - This place has suddenly become Dragons Den.

Transfer ban would be something.... In the window in which they were going to spend the most
