Good point. I think it's kind of the view that, to form a minority Government you need to have enough confidence of other parties to have a "majority confidence" in the house.
Short of having a second vote between just Labour and Tory (which might be a viable option), it is effectively that, since you can assume people who voted Lib Dem/SNP would support Labour over Tory.
That raises a point actually - there's no point having a second general election, but to be fair to all, they could keep the seats as is, but have the people vote between the two largest parties as to who forms a minority Government - Labour or Tory.
I think it'd be better to go the other way. Split both Labour and the Conservatives to have far more choice in political parties. I'm pretty centrist (liberal on social matters and economically conservative) and wanted Brexit and there was no party I wanted to vote for. The Tories were the least worst choice for me.
It would mean more coalitions but they'd work better if they were the norm rather than unusual, as happens in much of the continent. A two party system just allows the popular party of the time to push further and further from the centre guided by philosophy rather than realism.

I'm not sure that's true, mate. Certainly in 1987. Even in 1983, the economy was starting to go through the gears.That said, you do end up with something approximating a state of equilibrium. Most governments cannot go too far right or left because they become unelectable. The exception within living memory is of course Margaret Thatcher's conservatives in the 80s, where their electoral popularity was dependent principally on the outcome of the Falklands war.
