Grenfell Tower block disaster

i saw an interview with one of the residents on bbc news, a young lad. i think he was on to something. they apparently spent 10m on refurbishing the building. seems like they did a terrible job. you have to question london councils and there decision making. they seem to want socially cleanse london of poorer people and are purposely letting buildings fall apart so they can ' regenerate' areas. regenerate seems to mean get rid of the poor people and move in the rich and then sell new buildings on for a profit.
It's called gentrification.

Wow. I've been bracing myself for this to get considerably worse, but I've not heard figures.

Where did you hear this?

Some got out themselves in addition to those rescued but how many I've no idea. It doesn't bear thinking about what the final death toll might be though. One bloke was on the news this morning saying if he and his family stayed put, they'd probably be dead now. I think he was on one of the lower floors and many of those higher up wouldn't have been able to make that decision.

Do they know there were 600 in there?
They won't have a clue, because some of the occupied flats will have been sublet anyway, so the single 'resident' may have sublet to a family of 12, whilst he/she is safe.

Subletting of social housing is generally illegal, but that doesn't stop it.

It's probably an overestimation. There are 120 flats. There would need to be an average of five people in each of them for this to be true.

12 people have been confirmed killed in a huge fire that ripped through a west London tower block, but police expect the death toll to rise.

Up to 600 people are believed to have been inside Grenfell Tower's 120 flats when the blaze tore through the 24-storey building in the early hours.

Eighteen people are in critical care after 79 injured people were taken to hospital. But many are still missing after residents were left trapped on upper floors as flames rapidly ripped up the block after initially being told to stay in their homes.

Can't believe people making political capitol out of this. Christ almighty, take a fucking day off.

Mayor: Emergency services in 'recovery phase'

Emergency services have moved from the "rescue phase" of their operation to the "recovery phase", London Mayor Sadiq Khan says.

In a Facebook post, Mr Khan said the death toll is "a figure which I am afraid is expected to increase".

He added: "I have been in talks with Government ministers, including the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, this afternoon, and I am working hard with them and of course with our emergency services on the response to the fire.

"I raised the issue of checks on other tower blocks which have been going through similar refurbishment programmes to Grenfell House, and I welcome that ministers have said checks will now be carried out."
